Business Idea: Buy Old and Repair

In the currant economic times, the will to save on what would have maybe been before expensive purchases will probably tend to increase. The best way to help people save money while at the same time making some money for your doubling project is to buy up older worn out or run down things and fix them up.

There is literally huge range of products that you could do this with, things like bicycles, furniture, and many more. You can even extend it to things like household appliances, and gardening equipment, but beware of any regulations that may exist for working on electrical item’s and also about being insured in case your work does cause a fault later on.

There is an endless range of places that you can get supplies for this type of business, anything from roadside pick-ups, to the dump, car boot sales, and really anywhere else that people are trying to get rid of old stuff they no longer want. Much of these items may not need a lot of work, chair may just need to be sanded down and painted, a bike may just need a wheel straightened and new inner tubes, or a lawn mower may just need a basic service and clean and work fine.

Making money with this idea, will really come down to being aware and learning how much your potential market will bear, so often sticking to one type of product will be much more profitable in the long run as you will become more use to being able to gauge a good buy price and what you will be able to sell the product for. Another good tip may be to look for high quality items that have become fairly run down and do the bit of work needed to refresh them, and while it wont sell for a huge price you may be able to make reasonable gains.

Business Idea: DJ Service

When you are hosting a party or function the last thing that you want to think about is what music is playing. You either just want to set and forget it, or have someone else take care of it. This often ends in everyone trying to take there turn often at the same time to put on the music that they want to listen to.

An alternative for people who don’t want to have a problem with the music or just want a whole night of music relevant to the party theme without having to think about it is to hire a DJ. Doing this can make it a lot easier for the host and can mean that all the guest have a much better night, day or event.

The level of the service that you will need to provide will vary to some degree from even to event, some will wish to purely have you play music and will have sound equipment and such already available. Others may need you to provide the sound equipment. Or to even bring along lighting as well. Some may even want you to provide a small MC (Master of Ceremonies) part even.

All of these different services will require difference pricing levels. Especially if you are to provide sound or lighting, then you will need to take these cost into account. If you already own the equipment it did cost you something to so you need to pass this cost on to every customer, not the whole cost but a small portion. Otherwise if you need to lease the equipment then you need to pass this cost on, plus a little bit extra, to cover your time and such in organizing it. Additionally if you wish to you can also provide other services like providing projectors, and arrangement of presentations, so some occasions may require the need of an assistant.

The only thing that you need to be aware of in this business is to ensure that you are properly licensed to play the music you are playing and any other local licenses that are required to operate this kind of business. The licenseing to play the music is probably the most important as it can be easily a legal issue if you are not properly licensed.

Calculating what to charge

Many of the idea’s that you may have for this project, may initially rely on you charging either an hourly or set fee for providing a service. What you may be asking though is how do you calculate this fee. It is a good question which actually has many answers. I will try to give you a basic idea here, but it can vary quite a lot from idea to idea.

First you need to work out what you wish to pay yourself hourly. Often this can be either based on minimum wage, or on a rate that you decide for yourself. While everyone would like to make a really high amount per hour you also need to take into account the potential for actually selling the service. For example you may think that you would like to make $100 per hour, and want to mow lawns, well to be honest you are probably going to find yourself making nothing, because most people know they can hire someone to do the same job for less. Setting a rate between $10 and $30 is often a good starting point depending on the type of work.

Secondly you need to take into account any consumable items you may need. For example Lawn mowing you need petrol for the lawn mower, and for running errands in your car you have all the expenses of running your car. As an example you may find that it costs your lawn mower uses $1.20 in fuel per hour. Or it costs 50 cents per km to run your car. These are costs that you need to add on to your hourly rate.

Finally, if you have any other expenses associated with your business for example insurance, or licenses or any number of other things you need to make some educated guess to calculate this into the equation. For example you may have to pay $600 per year for insurance, to work this into your price you need to take an educated guess on the number of hours that you expect to work that year maybe 1200 hours. Which means every hour you need to charge 50 cents to cover your insurance.

So to sum this up with an example for a lawn care business. You want to make $15 per hour, it costs you $1.20 per hour to run the mower, and on average $4.00 to run your car between jobs, plus $0.50 for insurance per hour.If you average job is about 1.5 hours the following would be how to work out the price of the job.

($15.00 * 1.5)  + ($1.20 * 1.5) + $4 + ($0.50 * 1.5) which comes down to

$22.50 + $1.80 + $4.00 + $0.75 = $29.05 for a 1.5 hour job.

As you can see the additional costs you incur in running a business if not passed on in the price that you charge the customer could easily eat away at your profit. In this case, if you just charge $15 per hour you would in fact be making closer to $11 per hour. It is just like giving money away unless you are smart with working it out properly.

Business Ideas: Window Washing

As is the case with many chores that people must do around the house, a large portion of people don’t like doing them. While they want it done they often prefer not having to do it themselves. Window Washing is more often then not one of these things.

Window washing is one of those things that with a right tools is not to difficult once you have got the skill down. Doing a little practice at home first may be a good idea, work out a method to try and avoid leaving streaks or how to improve your speed. While practice can be useful don’t spend all your time practicing, you want to be able to get out there and do it at some point.

While it is not so difficult to wash the windows on a single story home, the biggest challenge is multi level homes. This is where this idea can be a little more complex, if you are working on other people’s property, and you are doing so in a business capacity, don’t assume that you are covered by their insurance when using your equipment. In fact it is often best to get insurance of your own should you cause any type of damage, or such more so to protect yourself, however what you will need or want in this area will differ from area to area and seeing an insurance consultant is a good idea.

When it comes to pricing your service this can also be a variable thing. It will depend on single or double story home, residential or commercial. Also what the local area is willing to pay will come into the equation. However you can usually work out a fixed price, for the service and the hourly rate you achieve will depend on how effecient you are.

Quick Find Update

Just wanted to throw a quick note up that i have found another 10 cents, going straight in.  I believe that brings me up to $21.25, maybe have to check the sums and make sure though.

Also in other things, i have finally got to Cash out level for one online program i am in, only thing is something about verifying adress, which apparently takes 2 weeks, so will have to wait a little to get that but it will throw $30 in the kitty. Which once that comes through will actually take me to step 11 ($32 – $64) So just waiting for that now.

Also after the post the other day i have been doing checking more and my website are doing really well, it is amazing how a little momentum gets things rolling even more. Anyway there are some more business ideas coming along soon, so keep your eyes open and happy reading.

New sites coming along well

Wanted to share an update on some of the sites that i have been working on. At least one is moving along quite well, which is Average Joe Host Initially this is a site that i had never really thought about doing much with. I had got it with some idea’s but had never been able to define exactly what i wanted to do.

Well i finally figured out what i wanted to do with it and that is to create a site to help others getting started on the internet. There is some stuff that i am writing myself and going to try and find some stuff from others to add in as well, to try and get a fairly well rounded range of content that should help a good range of people from beginners on.

Also from the new domains that i purchased a few weeks ago i have holder pages done for two of them. Need Toner and Coffee Locator. I am hoping that the holder page may get them picked up in google not so much to gain visitor’s but so that when i start adding more content in the next week or two google will already be watching. If not, i suppose a little promotion wont hurt to much.

Business Idea: Cleaning

Cleaning it is something that happens in so many places, and also happens very often. While working for someone else doing cleaning will often end at getting paid minimum wage and barely be worth your time. If you take the initiative to expand your options there can be profitable cleaning jobs where the money is better then working for someone else paid direct to you.

Often cleaning people’s homes or small businesses is the best option, as many larger or chain businesses have the job of cleaning contracted out. Which means it can be quite difficult for you to get into this sort of job. But home and smaller businesses often just hire a business or individuals to do the cleaning.

Probably the best part about cleaning is that the hourly rate can improve dependant on how effecient you are at the job. This is because the way that cleaning is often paid is a set range of tasks is defined and then a rate for doing all those tasks is determined, So while it may be determined that the tasks that need to be done will take 4 hours and cost the customer $120, after you take into account the consumables you need like rags, cleaning liquids and such, you may get $100 for the job, if you can complete the job in 2 hours at a reasonable standard you still get $100, but instead of working for $25 per hour you are now working for $50 per hour. Not a bad way to increase your income.

Business Idea: Lawn Mowing

Every home owner has a lawn that generally needs to be mowed once every week or two. While many people may now their own lawn, there are probably just as many that don’t want to mow their lawn. Although by no means is this a new idea, there is plenty of competition.

While it is not a good idea to go around and majorly undercut the competition. You could more then easily offer a no frills service, eg purely mow the lawn, for a set price. While this is not going to suit all your potential customers it can help you gain customers that would not normally pay for their lawn to be mowed because they just want it mowed, they don’t want edges done, or weeds sprayed, and may even be happy for you to leave the clippings on the garden.

Pricing will vary greatly depending on the area, but look at the competition and see what they charge, and what is included, and then work out a comparitive price for just mowing the lawn, without the other services. You can always offer the other services as add-ons at extra cost if you like for the potential of extra income as well. All you will need is a lawn mower, which will be a cost if you dont already own one, also if you plan to offer the other services then you would need to have the tools for these as well if you dont already have them this can be additional costs, so take this into account if you can afford them in your project before hand.

Business Ideas: House Sitting

While this may not be a new idea to some people, it is also something that you may not have thought of using in your doubling project. The basic idea is that you have clients who want to go on a vacation, but also want it to appear as if they are still at home, or have different things done regularly that they normally do themselves while they are away.

This is generally a service for people that are going away on extended trips, maybe overseas for a month or something, and want to be sure that their house doesn’t appear to be empty for that whole period. There are many different levels of service that can be provided within this idea, all that you can expect to make different levels of money. Some people may just want you to feed and walk their dog, others might want some gardening maintain or plants watered. While some may want lights turned on and off to make it appear that someone is home, or the full extent, is actually having you stay in the house while away.

The amount that you can make from this idea entirely depends on the level of service needed, but could range anywhere from $10 and up per day. One of the best places to find customers through may be a travel agency, when approaching a travel agency or such to refer customers to you, ensure that you are professional and form a good business relationship with them.

Income Ideas: Resell Rights

While probably the best way to create an income is to create your own product and sell it to everyone. There is a close second in resell rights. Generally focused on information products in either written, audio or video segments, there is a lot of opportunity to offer products that you have not had to create and keep all the profits.

There are literally hundreds of people that are offering you the right to resell their product’s on your website and keep all of the profits. These products can range from a simple 10 page report, right through to video series. For the most part you will pay based on how big the product you are buying the rights to is, and also based on how it is limited to certain number of people being able to resell the product. Often the more expensive the product the better chance you will have of reselling it at a reasonable profit. However be warned this is again not always true.

Often you can also find good value offers, where they will offer a number of products in a package that you can split up and sell individually. The idea that you should be working on is getting the most product for the lowest cost, at least initially while you are testing the market. While this may mean that you are offering a product that is available from a number of other people, you will have something you can get a handle on what you are doing with.

Resell rights can lead to a resonable stream of income if done properly with a suitable list of people to offer them to. However it will be small compared to the potential if you develop your own more extensive products.
